The Siren's Song.

As part of the narrative of the show, there's a kind of siren's song that draws the Machine along. the brief i gave Little Bulb was that it's sung by an ambiguous Ghost/Robot/Mermaid/Angel and that the lyrics have to be in Roila,  as well as playing them loads of french girls, anime soundtracks, film scores, Japanese choirs and other bits and pieces.
This is what they came up with, it's really good, Clare Beresford has such a beautiful voice...

Just finished stencilling the Machines tee. Don't know why I imagine him wearing a tee with a clown face on it, just seemed right in the drawings. He's tiny so he has to steal baby clothes to dress himself (I always draw robots fully dressed, blame Yokito Kishiro). There's something a bit Fist of the North Star about his outfit too, he's dressed a bit like Bat or one of Zeed's gang...

Roila and Little Bulb!

Welcome to week two! Despite the awful logo, i'm a big fan of Roila, or the Robot interaction Language, which was developed a couple of years ago as a form of esperanto for humans and robots, so we're going to try and use it in the show. This week we're being joined by the great Little Bulb Theatre (http://www.littlebulbtheatre.com/) in the copacity of music directors and hopefully they're going to write a siren song for us in Roila, which i think shall be the first piece of music in this new language. Exciting!

Holophonics

We've been messing around quite a lot with holophonic sound this week. Holophonics is a method of recording sound three dimensionally through two microphones so you can recreate the slight difference in distance that sound takes to travel to your two ears. What this means practically is that we can fake where sound is coming from through your headphones, we can make it sound like it  coming closer, behind  your head or running round your feet. lots of fun. above is us experimenting with making a fake buzzing fly sound, below is the recording, listen to it on headphones and you'll hear the effect.

So the great Barry Farrimond started today. Barry's a bit of a polymath, being a great sound engineer, programmer and also radio actor (spoiler: he's Ed Grundy), so he's perfect for the audio element of the show. The audio in SISBR is recorded, so to try and break that up and retain a live element we've been experimenting with a branching narative (like a radio play version of a choose your own adventure story), Barry wrote the program above that controls all the audio, HE WROTE A PROGRAM! I still haven't quite got over that...

Rehearsals

Was joined by Emma Williams today for the first day of rehearsals proper. was lots of fun, we messed around with the text and the puppet most of the day. it was nice to see him delivering text, a real weight off my mind, because you could see that a puppet could be used in a one on one context and still hold a narrative.
